Penetration control system for TIG welding

A novel method of analysing the thermal profile of autogenous TIG welds using an infrared sensor is being developed at TWI.

Work has shown that a top face monitoring and control system can compensate for changes in plate thickness from 1 to 3mm and can also detect misalignment and poor seam tracking.

This system is now ready to be developed from a prototype into a manufacturing tool.
