Arc Air Gouging

The process uses the same equipment as that used for MMA welding, i.e. a rectifier or motor-generator. An arc is struck between a copper-coated carbon electrode (4-20mm diameter) and the work. A compressed air jet attached to the electrode holder blows the molten metal away.

The process has limited application for cutting - even though materials up to 50mm thick can be cut. It is more commonly used as a gouging tool to prepare the reverse side of a weld for depositing a sealing run, or to remove metal which contains defects. It is also used as a low cost (compared with milling) method of preparing J-edge preparations.
