RISKWISE for Pipelines implemented on gas transmission system in Indonesia
PT. PERTAMINA GAS, a gas transmission and distribution subsidiary of Indonesia's national oil and gas company, has embarked on an asset integrity management programme using TWI's RISKWISE for Pipelines RBI software. Starting with their West Java gas pipeline system, the company is aiming to establish optimum inspection plans at minimised cost without compromising safety and integrity. By focusing on high risk areas, additional benefits include reduced risk of business interruption through preventive maintenance and fully transparent and auditable decision making.
With support from PT Trihasco Utama (TWI's local partner in Indonesia), a RISKWISE implementation programme was conducted. This started with data input including pipeline design and operational data as well as inspection results including corrosion condition, cathodic protection status, soil movement, etc. together with any leakage reports. The software facilitates a comprehensive risk analysis, leading to risk ranking, inspection planning and risk mitigation measures. After completion of the assessment West Java, PT Pertamina Gas plans to extend the RISKWISE application to other areas such as North and South Sumatera.
Kapar Power Station achieves 36 month runs and major cost savings by using RISKWISE
An ongoing risk-based inspection programme at Kapar Energy Ventures (KEV) 2420MW Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Power Plant in Malaysia has achieved its primary objective of extending inspection intervals. Covering boiler and balance of plant components, RISKWISE has enabled the station to gain approval from DOSH (Department of Occupational Safety and Health) to extend inspection intervals from 15 months to 36 months.
As an Independent Power Producer (IPP), an outage, typically of one month duration on a 500MW unit is extremely costly to KEV in terms of capacity and energy payments. By avoiding two such 15 month outages over a 36 month period, the implementation of RISKWISE has allowed the IPP to realise a considerable improvement in profitability.
Kapar is proud of the fact that the 36 month achievement is the first for a power plant in the State of Selangor in Malaysia.
RISKWISE for Boilers - a worthy benchmarking system
In 2008 TWI and ESB (Electricity Supply Board) undertook an RBI study using RISKWISE for Boilers. The software was implemented on Unit 1 270MW boiler at ESB's Aghada Station in Ireland. As one of the larger and more efficient power plants, Aghada's commercial performance is crucial to the future success of ESB in Ireland's deregulated electricity market. ESB's asset management activities were consequently directed to ensuring that Aghada's availability was not at risk.
The RISKWISE project proved useful for ESB as a validation for their asset management and risk assessment methodologies. The output from RISKWISE was used to challenge recommendations from their internal systems of assessment, prioritisation and work planning. Good consistency was achieved. A senior ESB Spokesperson commented: "We found the TWI study useful and a worthy benchmarking system - it is indeed something that I'm sure Asset Management will re-visit in time".
Seminar in Vietnam is well received
Ho Chi Minh City was the venue for a successful TWI seminar on asset integrity management. With organisational support from Integrated Safety Solutions (ISS) (TWI's local representative in Vietnam) the one-day event attracted around 30 delegates from oil & gas, chemical and power companies in the south of Vietnam. The seminar received highly positive feedback with most interest centred on RBI and life assessment.
Integrity management and inspection of pipelines seminar a hit in Libya
Early in April 2009 TWI hosted a very successful event in Benghazi at the premises of Ras Lanuf Oil and Gas Processing Company.
Over 30 attendees gathered to hear presentations on, and witness demonstrations of, the latest asset management procedures, inspection and assessment tools and techniques designed to help plant owners to optimise their operations and maximise their plant availability.
The main topics of the seminar covered overviews of risk based inspection and fitness for service assessment techniques as well as advanced non-destructive testing for pipelines. Delegates were given a practical demonstration of how RISKWISE can be used to optimise inspection of pipelines through a NACE direct assessment approach coupled with TeletestTM, TWI's long range ultrasonic inspection system.
Plans are being made to hold a similar seminar in Tripoli later in 2009 and anyone interested in attending/contributing is invited to contact us.
