Local Branch News - from your area!

Eastern Counties

The EC lecture on Marine Containment of LNG - A structural design and build perspective by Jim Macdonald of Lloyds Register, will be held on Wednesday 19th March at TWI.

Co-operation

The EC Branch has managed to hold some joint meetings, specifically with the local IoMMM and the RAe. We did this primarily to try and boost numbers attending events. The joint event has also exposure member to a wider range of technologies, which we believe is a good thing. However, setting up such meetings, especially the first one has not proved easy. Any hints would be appreciated. John Weston weston559@btinternet.com.

Do you need to advertise local Branch events or distribute local information?

If branches would like to contribute to the newsletter or advertise events/news from their area please send information to tom.howes@twi.co.uk

4. Younger members

Calling all Younger Members!

The Younger Members Committee is building a network of representatives across the UK to spread the word about engineering and allied careers.

Our main aim is to connect with students and lecturers in schools, colleges and universities in order to inform them of the fun and challenge they can find in an engineering career. We are also going to organise events targeted at our Younger Members and help with their CPD which is an essential part of career development.

The first Younger Member representative meeting was held on 24 January 2008 at The Welding Institute's headquarters in Cambridge. It was a great success and another is planned for 22 May this year.

We encourage members who are self-starters and are looking to move their careers and chosen disciplines into the future to attend the next event. This will give you the opportunity to work with likeminded people and inspire others to follow in your footsteps.

YMC treasure seekers

The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining younger members' committee (IOM3 YMC) held their first London Treasure Hunt on the 19th January 2007. One of the teams attending the event included members from The Welding Institute YMC (TWI YMC). The TWI team consisted of Duncan MacLennan, Helen Mulvana, Helen Goddin, Sarah Smith, Briony Holmes.

The first clue led to the meeting point in the Science Museum and the remaining 5 clues took the teams across central London and back to a pub to finish. Our team didn't win (too much sightseeing along the way!), but a great time was had by all, and the TWI team all got to know the IOM3 YMC much better through taking part.

Younger Members working with local schools, colleges and universities

TWI is currently working with Colleges in the Cambridgeshire area. A Younger Member representative presented to a Year 10 Engineering class at a local technology college in January, and several colleagues have been into another local secondary school to present to various classes on welding and joining technologies and their use in industry.

TWI also hosted a visit by Beacon East, ConneXions and several teachers from the Cambridgeshire area, to offer a view of TWI and the range of careers on offer in this industry.

Two of our younger member representatives have also presented and spoken to visiting groups of lecturers and students from Oxford and Cambridge universities.

We are trying to encourage further interaction with FE and sixth form colleges and will be presenting at a sixth form college in June. This specific event will reach 300 - 400 local students.

5. TWI Technical group meetings

Members and non-members are welcome to Technical Group meetings. The organisers for each group are drawn from The Welding Institute Professional/WJS Members and TWI's industrial membership teams. Speakers will include a blend of leading academic researchers and engineering practitioners who will offer a unique insight and perspective into the technical area being discussed.

Each Technical Group has an annual meeting and attendance gives you CPD, information sharing and networking opportunities.

Details of meetings, venues and times can be found on our events section.
