EPSRC Industrial Case Studentship 3 Dimensional Laser Suface Modification

University of Cambridge, Department of Engineering

Vacancy Reference No: NA05899

Limit of tenure applies*

An EPSRC Industrial CASE PhD studentship is available with TWI (www.TWI.co.uk) as the industrial partner and the Centre for Industrial Photonics (http://www.ifm.eng.cam.ac.uk/cip/) as the academic collaborator.

The aim of the project is to explore a new laser based concept for the production of three-dimensional surface structures on metallic substrates. Initial studies carried out at TWI and Cambridge have shown much promise in applications areas were precision surface structures are required. The research will entail experimental and theoretical investigations of high-speed laser matter interactions of high power Yb fibre and disc laser sources on metallic substrates under controlled atmospheres. The research will further investigate a wide range of experimental conditions in order to establish the relationships between the principle laser parameters and the resultant surface features. Process modeling will be used to obtain a greater understanding of this unusual phenomenon in order to provide industry with practical solutions for high speed surface structuring of metals. The study will operate across the interface between academic research and industrial application and as such requires someone with an excellent academic track record and evidence of delivering innovative solutions to real world problems. The successful candidate will have a 1st or 2.1 class degree in Physics, Engineering, or Materials Science.

The studentship is available for a period of three and a half years. For UK students and those EU students who have been resident in the UK for the previous 3 years for educational purposes, remuneration will be at the EPSRC studentship rate (currently £13,290/year) with all fees paid. For other EU students, this studentship will pay fees only. Overseas students are not eligible and should not apply.

Further details may be obtained from Dr Bill O'Neill (wo207@cam.ac.uk), or Dr Paul Hilton (paul.hilton@twi.co.uk). A letter of application and a detailed academic CV should be sent to wo207@cam.ac.uk. Please include complete contact information for two referees who can comment on your academic/ research abilities.

* Limit of tenure: 3.5 years
