The oil and gas industry produces in the region of 1 billion barrels of petroleum per day with a current approximate price of $75 per barrel equating to around $75 billion production per day. When a failure occurs it can result not only in the shut-down of production of a plant at a cost of around $300,000 per day but also damage to the environment with disastrous consequences and no means to calculate costs.
