TWI Frequently asked questions
by Mark Allen
It must be noted that the senior level examination is a supplementary examination of the Welding Inspector 3.1 level. Whilst it is not mandatory we strongly recommend that candidates attain the 3.1 qualification prior to undertaking the 3.2 examination.
It is not uncommon to find 'seasoned' welding inspectors attending only the Senior Welding Inspector's course and finding that although able to meet the examination requirements, serious shortfalls in relation to the 3.1 Welding Inspector examination, a pre-requisite of the Senior Welding Inspector examination, are commonplace.
Step 1: gain CSWIP Welding Inspector 3.1 approval.
The steps required to gain this qualification are detailed here.
Step 2: gain a PCN or CSWIP Radiographic Interpretation qualification.
You should consider attending TWI course NDT2A and NDT2B to prepare for this, although experienced radiographic interpreters may find NDT2B adequate.
Step 3: prepare comprehensive CV detailing all work history, with all welding/inspection duties verified. Send your CV to the Chief Examiner, CSWIP (chief.examiner@twi.co.uk) for assessment. The CSWIP examiner must approve your CV before you attend the Senior Welding Inspector course.
Step 4: confirm course and examination dates.
The mandatory training course most suitable for this is Certificated Senior Welding Inspector (ref WIS10 or WIS10E, the latter being a 5-day training and examination package).
Step 5: prepare for course
It is important before attending the course to prepare yourself adequately by reading the course syllabus and the examination requirement document. You may wish to contact a member of the training staff well before the course and discuss any issues that are specific to your needs.
COURSE COMPLETE, EXAMINATION PASSED - WELL DONE
If you didn't meet the grade first time, don't be too disappointed, it's a well respected qualification, therefore it is not a simple examination. Call the trainer who taught you for advice and refresher training prior to re-sitting the part you missed! (Candidates who attended a TWI Senior Welding Inspector course will receive this refresher training free of charge.)
Step 6: keep records of your work experience for the next 5 years for ease of renewal. It is mandatory to keep a logbook; you may also join the Registration Scheme for Welding Inspectors, details of which are available from twicertification@twi.co.uk
Step 7: consider gaining further knowledge and qualifications, for example, the European Welding Federation Inspection Diploma, or CSWIP Plant Inspector. Contact twicertification@twi.co.uk for further information. Send TWI a copy of your current CV and we can advise on the options available to you.
Step 8: 5 year renewal by documentary evidence and log book
Step 9: 10 year renewal by examination
