What are the steps to gain a CSWIP Welding Inspector 3.1 qualification?

TWI Frequently asked questions

by Mark Allen

CSWIP Welding Inspector 3.1 is a well established international qualification. Full requirements are detailed in the CSWIP Requirement Document WI-6-92.

Step 1: prepare a CV.
Your CV must be comprehensive, to include full details of typical duties carried out during any welding or inspection periods. Copies of all related certification must be supplied and full verification given for CV detail.

Step 2: send your CV to the Chief Examiner, CSWIP (chief.examiner@twi.co.uk) for assessment of experience and job profile. This assessment needs to be completed prior to you taking the training course.

Step 3: establish a suitable Code of Practice for use during the training course in preparation for the 'pipe part of the examination'.

Step 4: confirm course and examination dates.
The training course most suitable for this is Certificated Welding Inspector (ref WIS5 or WIS5E, the latter being a 5-day training and examination package).

Your course enrolment form needs to specify all appropriate requirements and include a current eyesight certificate as detailed in the CSWIP Requirement Document WI-6-92.

Step 5: contact a member of the training staff well before the course and discuss any issues that are specific to your needs.

COURSE COMPLETE, EXAMINATION PASSED - WELL DONE

If you didn't meet the grade first time, don't be too disappointed, it's a well respected qualification, therefore it is not a simple examination. Call the trainer who taught you for advice and refresher training prior to re-sitting the part you missed! (Candidates who attended a TWI Welding Inspector course will receive this refresher training free of charge.)

Step 6: keep records of your work experience for the next 5 years for ease of renewal. It is mandatory to keep a logbook; you may also join the Registration Scheme for Welding Inspectors, details of which are available from twicertification@twi.co.uk

Step 7: consider gaining CSWIP Senior Welding Inspector 3.2
Typically 2 years further experience is required, but this depends on your duties/responsibilities. Speak to your trainer for advice.

Step 8: consider gaining further knowledge and qualifications.
Send TWI a copy of your current CV and we can advise on the options available to you.

Step 9: 5 year renewal by documentary evidence

Step 10: 10 year renewal by examination
