TWI Frequently asked questions
For International/European Welding Specialist (IWS/EWS), Technologist (IWT/EWT) and Engineer (IWE/EWE) the examinations are based on 4 main subject areas:
Part 1: welding processes and equipment.
Part 2: materials and their behaviour during welding.
Part 3: construction and design.
Part 4: fabrication and applications engineering.
In addition to the above 4 modules there are two supplementary modules: Advanced welding processes and equipment (where the state of the art in welding technology is presented) and Practical welding technology (to help them gain knowledge on the control of different welding processes), both to be completed at the Specialist Level.
Also, it is an EWF and IIW requirement that the fabrication and applications engineering module is to be the last completed.
Currently the examination format in the UK for each level and for each part is:
IWS/EWS - 1 narrative question from a choice of 3, and 30 multiple choice questions
IWT/EWT - 3 narrative questions from a choice of 5
IWE/EWE - 4 narrative questions from a choice of 6, and a nominal 30 minute oral examination for each part.
At the end of the fabrication and applications engineering module, but only at Engineer level, the written examination consists of a case study, instead of the usual 4 questions.
All examinations are presently only available at the end of the appropriate training course. Training courses are a pre-requisite to the examination, further details are provided here.
Requirement documents for these examinations are available from twicertification@twi.co.uk. Further information on the course and examination is available from Jane Orchard (jane.orchard@twi.co.uk) or Lynn White (lynn.white@twi.co.uk), IIW/EWF Examination Co-ordinator.
