What counts as CPD (continuing professional development)?

CPD can be related to your working environment, and could take the following forms -

Formalised Courses:

  • Further education (e.g. N/SVQs, Diplomas, Advanced modern apprenticeship)
  • Higher degrees (Masters, Doctorate)
  • Distance learning (e.g. the OU)
  • Short Courses (organised by professional institutions, employers, external bodies)

Imparting Knowledge:

  • Preparing and making presentations
  • Preparation of Papers for conferences or publication
  • Coaching/teaching/lecturing

Attending events:

  • Conferences organised by professional bodies
  • WJS Branch meetings
  • Technical group meetings
  • Other institutions' branch meetings

Committee work:

  • WJS Branch committees
  • Other institutions' branch committees
  • Younger members' committees

Voluntary work:

  • Relevant work with schools/community activities

Private study

  • Learning foreign languages
  • Learning new skills
  • Reading relevant publications and journals relevant to your field (be prepared to be quizzed on it before it will be authenticated!)

These items can be authenticated by your nearest WJS branch secretary, at a branch meeting, or by the event organiser at the time of the event. Your employer can authenticate courses and other work-related items.
