How do I make a fuel cell stack?

TWI Frequently asked questions

by Caroline Williams

In practice, fuel cells are not operated as single units; instead, they are connected together to build voltage. A series of cells is referred to as a 'stack'. A component known as the bipolar separator or interconnect connects the anode of one cell to the cathode of the next cell in the stack. Depending on the particular application, fuel cells can be configured in series, parallel, or series and parallel.
