What is a Knowledge Transfer Network, KTN?

TWI Frequently asked question

by Sue Dunkerton

Knowledge Transfer Networks (KTNs) are an initiative, launched in 2005 by the UK government, to escalate the rate of innovation in the UK by bringing together all persons and organisations that can advance the process leading to the rapid adoption of new products and processes.

The Networks operate at a strategic level and support the Technology Strategy Board and industry in their development of priority themes and actions for future initiatives. Increasingly, they will support the activity of working across government departments to ensure collaboration at national and regional level where that can assist the innovation process.

KTNs operate over a range of technologies and markets and engage with all parts of the supply-chain from industry to academia, together with government departments. There are now 14 KTNs currently operating (see link to all KTNs below) and these provide a range of services including: roadmapping; networking events; innovation support; brokerage; and supporting new collaborative opportunities.

TWI is a lead Partner in the Energy Supply & Generation KTN, the Health Tech & Medicines KTN, and Manager of the National Composites Network (part of the Materials KTN).
