Can friction welding be used to join nickel and cobalt superalloys?

TWI Frequently asked questions

The aerospace industry has made great use of friction welding technology for joining superalloys for the following reasons: -

  • In many instances it is the only joining method available for producing good weld properties.
  • More consistent weld quality.
  • Lower cost owing to shorter weld time when compared with other processes.

Good quality joints are obtained in like to like and dissimilar metal combinations basically because there is no macro-melting at the weld interface. This means that none of the potential problems associated with fusion weldingthese materials, such as microcracking, porosity, etc. exist.
