How are liquid crystal polymers (LCPs) made?

TWI Frequently asked questions

by Sam Rostami

The majority of commercially available thermoplastic liquid crystal polymers or copolymers contain rigid monomers such as hydroxybenzoates, hydroxynaphthoates and hydroquinones. These rigid monomers are incorporated into the main orthe side chain of the polymers through a polymerisation process known as polycondensation copolymerisation. The corresponding LCPs are referred to as main or side chain liquid crystal polymers accordingly.
