Is it possible to predict the service life of a plastic component?

TWI Frequently asked questions

by Sam Rostami

The ability to predict the service life of plastic components is highly desirable throughout industry. TWI has facilities to model the service life of materials using techniques geared to the specific requirement of particular applications. These include:
  • Modelling of the long-term effect of factors such as temperature, stress, environment, etc on the materials used, and components produced, in particular applications.
  • Specialised mathematical models tailored for specific conditions.
  • Finite element modelling of multi-component, complex parts.
  • Reliability modelling based on accelerated ageing tests.
