Friction hydro pillar processing, friction extrusion, friction surfacing and friction stir processing can all be used to reprocess or manufacture materials.
Changing a material from a cast to a wrought state or producing a novel material containing a particulate (as in a metal matrix composite) are examples of materials reprocessing and materials manufacture that can be achievedefficiently using the above friction-based techniques.
At present, there is strong interest in the use of friction stir processing to develop fine equiaxed grain structures in a variety of alloys including Al, Ti, Mg and Cu. This improves mechanical properties, and also formability. Insome cases, it can make alloys suitable for superplastic forming.
