Is friction welding confined to joining round or tubular components?

TWI Frequently asked questions

The most common form of friction welding uses rotation to provide the rubbing action to generate friction heating between two components subjected to an axial force. However, due to the excellent weld integrity and reproducibilitythat can be achieved, the technique can now be applied to irregularly shaped components using linear, angular, orbital or positional arrest variations. These machine variants have widened the industrial application of frictionwelding.
