Where can I find information on weld volumes, welding times and costs?

TWI Frequently asked question

by Chris Miller

Some welding consumable manufacturers provide information about the volume and weight of weld metal required for particular joint types. This may be given in their welding consumable handbooks or available as a calculation aid ontheir websites.

Other sources of this information are welding reference books such as:

  • Welding Handbook, Vol. 1, Welding Science and Technology; published by AWS

  • The Procedure Handbook of Arc Welding; published by Lincoln Electric

TWI has published comprehensive standard data for arc welding times and consumable usage for MMA and semi-automatic MAG welding of carbon steels (5 to 25mm fillet leg lengths and 3 to 25mm butt welds), and for manual TIG welding ofcarbon and stainless steel sheet and for semi-automatic MAG welding of carbon steel sheet. This information is available on TWI's website in two volumes:

Volume 1 - MMA and semi-automatic MAG welding of carbon steels (5 - 25mm fillet leg lengths, and 3 - 25mm butt welds).

Volume 2 - Manual TIG welding of carbon and stainless steel sheet, and semi-automatic MAG welding of carbon steel sheet.
