ASME IX does not consider base metal thickness to be an essential variable for welding performance qualification using any of the listed welding processes. Consequently, no limitations are specified for the range of base metalthickness qualified by a particular qualification test weld.

Thickness limits are specified for deposited weld metal. These details are given in QW-452 .1(b).
