TWI Frequently asked questions

There are two standards which are directly relevant in this area.
EN ISO 13919-2 2001 and EN ISO 13919-2 2001, 'Welding - Electron and Laser Beam Welded Joints - Guidance on Quality Levels for Imperfections'. Part 1 covers steel welds; Part 2 covers aluminium welds.

Amercian Welding Society ANSI/AWS C7.2: 1998 'Recommended Practices for Laser Beam Welding, Cutting and Drilling'.

Both standards give a comprehensive description of acceptable levels of imperfections in laser welded joints. However, further information in this area can be obtained from TWI laser_sheet@twi.co.uk
