Are there standard tests for plastics welds?

TWI Frequently asked questions

A number of standard destructive and non-destructive test methods for assessing the performance of welds in plastics are currently being drawn up within CEN, the European Committee for Standardisation. Eleven are now official Standards, these are:
  • EN 12814-1:1999: 'Testing of welded joints of thermoplastics semi-finished products - Part 1: Bend test'

  • EN 12814-2:2000: 'Testing of welded joints of thermoplastics semi-finished products - Part 2: Tensile test'

  • EN 12814-3:2000: 'Testing of welded joints of thermoplastics semi-finished products - Part 3: Tensile creep test'

  • EN 12814-4:2001: 'Testing of welded joints of thermoplastics semi-finished products - Part 4: Peel test'

  • EN 12814-5:2000: 'Testing of welded joints of thermoplastics semi-finished products - Part 5: Macroscopic examination'

  • EN 12814-6:2000: 'Testing of welded joints of thermoplastics semi-finished products - Part 6: Low temperature tensile test'

  • EN 12814-7:2002: 'Testing of welded joints of thermoplastics semi-finished products - Part 7: Tensile test with waisted test specimens'

  • EN 12814-8:2001: 'Testing of welded joints of thermoplastics semi-finished products - Part 8: Requirements'

  • EN13100-1:1999: 'Non destructive testing of welded joints of thermoplastic semi-finished products: visual examination'
  • EN 13100-2:2004: 'Non-destructive testing of welded joints of thermoplastics semi-finished products: X-ray testing'

  • EN 13100-3:2004: 'Non-destructive testing of welded joints of thermoplastics semi-finished products: Ultrasonic testing'

    And one is in preparation:
  • prEN 13100-4: 'Non-destructive testing of welded joints of thermoplastics semi-finished products: High voltage testing'
