When should computer modelling methods be used?

TWI Frequently asked questions

Computer models are not substitutes for engineering training and experience. Computer models, however, are now a necessary part of the engineering design and structural assessment process in all industries, because they accelerate thedesign process.

Modelling has gained this position through the development of high quality, robust commercial engineering software and the availability of low cost, but powerful computers. The result is that modelling is used in the followingways:

  • Modelling is used to reduce the time-to-market of new products.
  • Relatively inexperienced, but well qualified staff can conduct complex thermal or mechanical calculations.
  • Parametric, what-if-type assessments can be made without the need for new tooling.
  • Safer or more precise and therefore efficient designs can be developed through an improved understanding of product behaviour.
