Why are tests needed to obtain the mechanical properties of adhesives?

TWI Frequently asked questions

by Richard Court

The mechanical properties of adhesives are important because they determine the final performance of the adhesive joint, such as its strength and deflection under load. This makes it important to know what the mechanical property values of the adhesive are, and hence the need for tests to determine these mechanical properties.

Once the tests have been performed, the mechanical property values can be used for:

  • Design
  • Selection of materials
  • Quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC)
  • Proof of concept
