My company is involved in MMA pipe welding at 'Class 2' level and needs two more welders approved to BS: 4872: Pt 1: 1982. How long will it take to train them to the required level?

TWI Frequently asked question

by Steve Sleep

The length of time to train and approve your welders depends on several factors:

  • your specific company requirements;
  • the experience, skill level and attitude towards training of each welder.

Before embarking on training, we recommend that TWI's Welder Training Centre assesses the practical ability of each welder. This takes around four hours and will define the content and duration of an individual's training programme. In the UK, these initial assessments can be done at Abington (Cambridge).

When reviewing the results of an assessment (and our recommended training topics and course duration), you can discuss details with our programme managers and instructors to ensure that the follow-on training exactly meets your needs before committing to a course.
