Background

This report describes an experimental method for measuring load point and centre point displacements in three point single edge notch bend specimens. An analysis is carried out which shows that the measurements can be obtained to an accuracy of better than +/- 2%.

It is demonstrated how the new test method can be combined with a standard fracture mechanics bend test to give simple measurements of the rotational factors.

Finally, attention is drawn to various applications of the test method, including a particular application to fracture mechanics tests on weldments.
