A review of the physical and welding metallurgy of titanium aluminides

TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 463/1992

By P L Threadgill

Background

Titanium aluminides are a class of ordered intermetallic alloy which have significant potential in gas turbines, military airframes and other high performance applications, where their high temperature strength and corrosion resistance, and low density can be exploited. The purpose of this review has been to identify and collate all information pertinent to the joining of titanium aluminides, in order to identify possible metallurgical or other problems, and areas where future research and development work is most needed.
