An assessment of the susceptibility of Al-Mg alloy welds to stress corrosion cracking

Scope

The stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) susceptibility of wrought aluminium-magnesium alloys is known to increase with magnesium content but there are few data appropriate to weldments. MIG welds were produced in 5454 (2.6%Mg) plate using filler metals with a range of Mg contents producing weld metals with 2.8-3.9%Mg and a MIG weld was also made in 5083 (4.6%Mg) plate. Electron beam welds were made in both plates. Stress-corrosion tests were carried out on these welds and parent materials in 3%NaCl solution with and without sensitising heat treatments.
