An Initial Study of Thermal Cycle Prediction in Submerged-Arc Welds

TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 218/1983

By J A Barlow and D F Percival

Background

As an addition to The Welding Institute's finite element system, a finite element, two dimensional, non-linear transient heat conduction program has been developed, which can use the shape of the weld pool, the thermal properties of the material and experimentally measured weld fusion boundary thermal data to predict thermal cycles experienced in the remainder of the parent plate. Application to submerged-arc welds has permitted the comparison of measured and calculated thermal cycles, and good agreement has been found between them.
