An Investigation Into The Effect Of Joint Angle On Bead Geometry For The Submerged-Arc Welding Of Mild Steel

TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 53/1977

By J C McGlone

Background

The effect of preparation angle on weld bead geometry has been examined for conventional single wire submerged-arc welding of mild st eel plate. Additional major variables examined were welding current, voltage, travel speed, and wire diameter. An acid manganese silicate flux, DECP polarity and 19mm steel were used throughout. The effect of the variables examined on significant weld bead dimensions was established with a factorial approach. An analysis of the results obtained has indicated the significant effects of preparation angle and allowed the development of a technique to predict acceptable welding procedures for single-pass V-groove welds.
