Effect of Remelting on OES [Optical Emission Spectroscopy] Calibrations for Ferritic Steels

TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 246/1984

By S M Stevens

Background

The effect of remelting standards, both in solid form and as millings, on the calibrations obtained for optical emission spectroscopy (OES) on ferritic steels as compared to calibrations using solid samples, has been studied. The results indicate that the calibrations for remelted solid standards and remelted standard millings are equivalent with the exception of titanium, and that separate calibrations are required for remelted and solid samples in the case of carbon, sulphur, phosphorus, silicon, manganese and titanium. No practical differences were obtained between the solid and remelted calibrations for nickel, chromium, molybdenum, vanadium, copper, niobium, aluminium, boron, tin and cobalt.
