Factors Controlling Weld Toughness - The Present Position Part 2. Weld Metals

TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 14/1976

By R E Dolby

Background

Recent information on metallurgical and welding procedural factors which control the toughness of C-Mn and low alloy weld metals is reviewed. The variable effects of major alloying and microalloying additions on toughness are discussed in terms of a new model which rationalises observed behaviour, and should lead to a sounder basis for the selection of consumables in both as-welded and stress relieved deposits. Factors controlling fracture by cleavage and microvoid coalescence are discussed separately, and a summary gives recommended control measures for improving weld metal toughness.
