Friction Welding Of Dissimilar Metal Combinations: Copper To Stainless Steel

TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 23/1976

By W O Dinsdale and E D Nicholas

Background

The effect of machine parameters and surface condition have been studied for friction welds between tough pitch copper and austenitic stahless steel using 25mm diameter solid bar. Weld quality was evaluated by means of the hammer bend test, shear test and metallographic sectioning.

The results showed that the process was tolerant to variations in both machine parameters and surface contamination. Only when the stainless steel was left in the saw cut condition was the strength reduced. It was also observed that the displacement rate in-process monitor could give misleading results if variations of surface condition or contaminants are present.
