An evaluation of NDT methods for adhesion testing of thermally sprayed coatings

TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 748/2002

I J Munns and S A Shaw

Background

The measurement of the adhesion of a surface coating to a substrate is important in establishing the quality and fitness-for-purpose of a coated component. A number of adhesion tests exist but most are destructive and can only be applied to specially prepared test specimens.

This report examines the usefulness of a range of non-destructive testing (NDT) methods in determining the suitability for the characterisation of adhesion strength in high velocity oxyfuel (HVOF) and arc sprayed coatings.

Objective

  • Determine the capability of NDT methods for the characterisation of adhesion differences in thermally sprayed coatings.
