Grain size and morphology in nickel-chromium alloy weld metal

TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 405/1989

By T G Gooch

Background

The properties of fusion welds arc highly dependent on the grain size produced in the various weld areas. Other workers have examined the grain size developed in the heat affected zone (HAZ), but there has been virtually no attention to the weld metal grain size, as opposed to the solidification structure.

Manual metal arc welds were made in 20mm nickel alloy, lnconel 600, using Inconel 182 electrodes. Initial parent grain size was varied, and a range of arc energy from 0.7-2.7 kJ/mm was employed. The resultant HAZ and weld metal grain sizes were measured by a linear intercept procedure.
