Introducing computer integrated manufacture to small and medium enterprises

TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 497/1994

By T J Brooker

Background

This project studied the development of computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) strategies and implementations in a small and medium enterprise (SME) context. Using structured analysis, the IDEF(0) methodology, two typical SMEs were studied to produce models of their present systems and their future needs. This knowledge allows management to develop a CIM implementation strategy. An example implementation was achieved and a general 'to be' CIM model developed. This model will be of benefit to SMEs in developing their own models and strategies. An integration of typical SME manufacturing functions was demonstrated at TWI.
