Introduction to microwave heating and its use for the joining of ceramics

TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 457/1992

By J A Fernie

Background

Microwave heating is fundamentally different to any other form of heating. Direct generation of heat within the bulk of a material, a characteristic of microwave heating, leads to reduced processing times, reduced energy consumption, increased production and hence increased efficiency. This report describes the principles of microwave heating and reviews the research undertaken for ceramic materials; particularly joining ceramics.
