Investigation into the abrasive wear resistance of some  experimental hardfacing materials

Background

High stress abrasive wear testing was carried out on experimental hardfacing alloys containing mixtures of hard particles and matrix powders. The deposits were produced by the plasma transferred arc (PTA) process. The experimental materials consisted of mixtures of two hard particles, chromium boride (termed CRB) and tungsten vanadium carbide (termed WVC), with two matrix alloys, an austenitic stainless steel and a Ni-Cr-Si-B alloy, Deloro 50. The weight loss of the materials under high stress abrasion was measured in both dry and water-lubricated tests, and comparison was made with commercially available alloys.
