Missed joints in electron beam welding: an investigation of techniques for assessing magnetic effects

TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 427/1990

By B G I Dance

Background

Magnetism remains a problem in thick section Electron beam (EB) welding of ferritic materials. In this report, two aspects of the problem are examined:

i) Residual magnetism, its dependence on material type and its elimination via demagnetising techniques.

ii) Magnetism generated by dissimilar metal joints.

In both cases, experimental techniques for investigation of these problems were evolved, and preliminary results are reported.
