Review of laser heat treatment and surfacing techniques

Technology Briefing 130 - November 1980

P J Oakley

FULL REPORT

Synopsis

The benefits of using high power lasers to heat discrete areas of materials were recognised shortly after lasers were first developed. Laser processes that utilise this include cutting, drilling, welding and a range of surface treatments. These surface treatments include transformation hardening, tempering and annealing, alloying, cladding, glazing, grain refining and shock hardening.

This report describes the mechanisms of the range of laser heat treatment and surfacing techniques and reviews the literature on material studies and applications. The current industrial status of the techniques and areas for further research are discussed.
