The Weldability Of Low Carbon Structural Steels

TWI Industrial Member Report Summary 44/1977

By R E Dolby

Background

The paper discusses the advantages of low carbon steels with particular reference to potential cracking problems during fabrication and performance in service. Future trends are highlighted and attention drawn to the fact that in some situations it may be difficult to fully exploit the improved weldability of low carbon materials because the weld deposit can be controlling, both as regards the risk of hydrogen induced cracking and fracture toughness.
