The effects of composition on the toughness and creep behaviour of weld metals for advanced high temperature 9-13%Cr steels

Background

In the previous phase of this project butt welds were produced in 30mm thick W-containing steel plates NF616, produced by Nippon Steel Corporation, and HCM12A, produced by Sumitomo Metal Industries. The manual metal arc (MMA) electrodes used contained different levels of Ni, Co and Cr, the higher chromium content weld metals potentially being of interest because of the beneficial effect of Cr on high temperature oxidation resistance. Weld metal tensile data were determined at room temperature, and Charpy and CTOD transition curves were produced. In the present phase, weld metal 600°C tensile and 600°C creep rupture data have been obtained.

Objective

To determine the effect of variations in Co, Ni and Cr on creep rupture behaviour in weld metals for selected examples of W-containing 9 and 10.5%Cr steel weld metals.
