Polymers in Extreme Environments

Polymers are required to work in increasingly extreme environments. In the oil and gas industry polymers are being used as pipe linings and coatings. Elastomers are required for a range of joining and sealing applications. To provide confidence in the use of polymers, and in order to expand the range of applications, an understanding of material behaviour in extreme environments is required.

TWI has a broad range of expertise when it comes to the selection, testing and qualification of non-metallic materials (polymers).   Offering an extensive selection of test capabilities including;

  • Static Load: 0.5kN to 1750kN,

  • Temp: -196°C to +400°C

  • Fatigue testing – numerous machines 10kN to 1000kN

  • Pressure – High Pressure/High Temperature (HPHT) conditions with provision for fatigue loading materials at these conditions

  • Strain Gauging

If Standard tests are required TWI brings significant added value with its expert interpretation of results and technical reporting. In addition, when it comes to non-standard testing of materials TWI has extensive experience of test development and product evaluation.

Polymers in Extreme Environments
With gas specific permeation measurement, diffusion and permeation characteristics can be measured while testing with gas mixes. Super critical carbon dioxide (CO2) testing is also available. Changes in mechanical and physical properties monitored as a function of exposure time with DSC and FTIR equipment available.

Where components provide some safety-critical function, estimates of service life can be made via accelerated exposure testing. TWI can test with various aggressive chemicals such as acids and solvents, and can perform exposure and permeation testing with hydrogen sulphide (H2S).

TWI has facilities to test to a wide range of industry standards, but can also develop tests for specific applications.

With an expert knowledge of polymer processes and test methods TWI is well placed to advise on unanticipated component failure. A key benefit of using TWI for failure investigations is that we remain independent of all, otherwise interested parties.

For the Oil & Gas and Construction Industries TWI has extensive experience in the manufacturing processes (including Factory Acceptance Testing – FAT) of bonded elastomer components such as flexible elements and earthquake bearings. TWI can provide personnel for the inspection of high-value qualification tests, providing experts with material specific experience and full third party Independence.

Interpretation of test results and an understanding of materials behaviour can bring the confidence required to consider new materials for extreme environments.
