Design and Assessment

Fatigue damage can occur in all structures that are subjected to fluctuating loads. In order to resist failure of the structure it is important that the fatigue resistance is taken into consideration during the design phase.

TWI has played a pivotal role in the development of fatigue design codes since the earliest rules for highway bridges in the 1950s, and current Fatigue Integrity Management staff serve on several national and international committees overseeing design issues.

TWI's 'Fatigue design rules for welded steel joints', first published in 1976, still provide the basis of many fatigue design standards including BS, Eurocode and IIW documents. We are therefore uniquely placed to provide expert guidance on fatigue design, whether you are seeking instant advice on code interpretation or a comprehensive fatigue assessment study.

Discussions on fatigue assessment at the concept or early design stage may provide significant savings in design and fabrication costs, and may prevent costly fatigue failures, design changes and re-work.

‘The work carried out by TWI was to good standards as expected. TWI staff was excellent in accommodating the request for testing quickly.’ - Mr Ahmed Nabeeh PhPC
